Boring! Mundane! Bland! Not creative! Scheduled! Many of the words we use to describe those of us who are consistent. Although many may argue that some are consistently inconsistant that’s not what we’re talking about today. Those who like structure and show up on time and immitate the mail man, through rain, sleet, and snow and darkness of night… You know what I mean! They are the teacher’s pets, the boss’s pet, and of course if it weren’t for that dark shadow on their nose we’d all like them. Consistent people just drive most people nuts, unless you’re depending on them.
I like my doctor to be consistently right about my ailment. I like my auto mechanic to be consistently right about fixing my car. I like my paycheck to be consistently on time. I like my prayers to be consistently answered. Woe, where did that come from?
As consistent as I am much of the time I’m inconsistent in my prayer time. I want God to always show up even when I struggle to get out more than a short, “Please God, don’t let traffic on Euharlee Road be backed up to Spicewood this morning!” Probably the thing we need to be most consistent in we are the least consistent on, prayer. We want God to always be on time but we struggle with rarely showing up!
“Pray without ceasing”, is the scriptural encouragement and so we ought to pray in this manner. It was said by an old evangelist for whom I can’t remember his name, “If you can only give God 15 minutes a day then call it quits on the Christian life. You’re not going to make it!” I’m not sure I like that but how can we walk in the Spirit if we’re not consistent in our prayers?
Begin today! Schedule it in your day planner. Mark it on your mirror. Spend time with God in prayer on a consistent basis not for what He will give you but for how He will change you! Stop reading and PRAY!
